Schwabbies continue to serve their communities through the pandemic

February 16, 2022
See how Schwab employees find ways to give back to their communities when in-person volunteering and other traditional methods are limited.

As we all continue to feel the impact of the ongoing pandemic in our everyday lives, I’m proud to say our employees desire to serve hasn’t wavered.

In 2021, the world continued to navigate the serious social and economic implications of COVID-19, among other crises. But through it all, Schwabbies demonstrated their continuing passion for helping others. There were many noteworthy accomplishments over the last year, but I’d like to highlight several that underscore our culture of service.

Through the tireless commitment of our employees, in 2021 Schwab:

  • Launched Moneywise America, our new flagship financial literacy program for teens. We’re so excited that nearly 1,000 Schwabbies have started training to date and will join forces with nonprofits this year to give teens from all backgrounds—and especially those from under-resourced communities—an equal shot at financial security. One employee said, “As a former educator, and someone who taught financial literacy at my last firm, I am so proud of Schwab for understanding the need for this and for absolutely delivering! I look forward to representing the company and being a part of this program!”

  • Empowered employees to give back during Schwab Volunteer Week (SVW). We were thrilled to have more than 3,600 employees participate in 320 service projects, such as card writing, building Kynd Kits, making capes, and hosting virtual trivia contests. A Schwab volunteer who worked with SVW nonprofit participant Capes for Courage said, “I can’t tell you how many of my friends said their kids received a cape when they were in the hospital, and they loved them! This project is really making a big impact for the kiddos who receive them.”

  • Quickly responded and provided relief to a variety of disasters on a domestic and global front including Afghanistan, Haiti, Texas winter storms, Tennessee flash floods, Western wildfires, and Hurricane Ida. Schwabbies donated nearly $270K for disaster relief with double matching gifts.
  • Partnered with Meals on Wheels America for the second year in a row during our annual Season of Giving campaign to help alleviate senior isolation and hunger through daily nutritious meals, social visits, and safety checks. Schwabbies reached our goal to raise $150K and created 3,712 greeting cards, giving seniors the comfort of knowing they are cared about during the holiday season.

I am proud and inspired by the thousands of Schwabbies who continued to step up to help our communities and nonprofits deal with the many challenges we faced in 2021. This year, we look forward to creating even more opportunities for employees to engage with their colleagues and give back to their communities.
