My Schwab Story: Jeff Scott, U.S. Air Force

It was a journey he didn’t expect to take, but Major (USAF, Ret.) Jeff Scott found
that a life of service to his country was an unparalleled choice.

“The lifestyle of service suited me and I got to work with amazing and selfless people. And that’s not just the Active Duty; I include military spouses and children in that description. The way military families come together to achieve a common purpose is unlike anything a civilian will ever feel.  It was an honor to serve.”

Jeff enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school and was accepted into the first class of the LEAD program, Leaders Encouraging Airman Development, where active commanders would nominate their enlisted Airman for appointments to the Air Force Academy.  Jeff then attended the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs. He completed his degree as a distinguished graduate and went on to serve as an aerospace physiologist at Air Force Bases in Maryland, New Mexico, and California.  After completing in-residence graduate school at Arizona State University he spent the next chapter of his career in engineering psychology. His final military role was working at the Pentagon in the Office of the Chief Engineer as the subject matter expert for human systems integration.

“At that point, I was presented a choice. Submit for a promotion to the next rank or apply for early retirement.  I applied for early retirement, and that brought me to Schwab. That was more than three years ago.”

Jeff is now based in Lone Tree, Colorado, and works as a user experience (UX) researcher for the voice channel at Schwab, working on products like softphone and voice ID.

“To be a UX researcher, you must understand how users interact with the tools they’re given, how users think and how to design ‘through users’ eyes.’ I now get to tilt my Air Force experience toward client representative work stations and speech interface.  Now I’m a team manager, and my experience leading while I was uniform is a more straightforward skill transfer.”

So why did Jeff choose Schwab? “I was a Schwab client for about ten years before I came to work here.  Every time I called in, I was treated like I was the most important call of the day. I was impressed then and I’m still impressed now. “

When asked about the transition to civilian life after such a productive time in the military, Jeff says the move to Schwab was easy. “Schwab’s values of service, integrity and excellence are perfectly aligned with my values and those of the Air Force. It was a very easy transition for me.”
